A group of Midtown politicians is backing a new plan for high-rise housing around Penn Station, urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to finally ditch the stalled megaproject that would rely on office towers built by Vornado Realty Trust.

Local politicians have big plans to build up to 5,000 units of housing and a park in the blocks surrounding Penn Station — reversing a controversial, largely commercial, proposal backed by Governor Kathy Hochul and real estate developer Vornado to construct office towers and displace neighbors.

New York City leaders unveiled a plan Thursday to bring affordable housing to the Penn Station area, along with a green space.
