The American Airlines flight was carrying 64 people when it collided with a Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport.
Officials are examining black boxes from both aircraft and say they appear to be in good condition and may provide details on what went wrong.
The US Figure Skating association confirms "several members of the skating community" were on board the flight, which was arriving from Kansas.
