EC2-Classic is not supported by AWS anymore. AWS stopped supporting “EC2-classic” and introduced “EC2-VPC”; in other words an “AWS VPC” network.

Echoing that, many EC2 customers may not even be aware of EC2-Classic: Accounts created on or after December 4, 2013 were created as VPC-only, and were given access to EC2-Classic only upon request.

EC2-Classic required public IP addresses made available at the time, or tunneling, to communicate with AWS resources in a VPC.

A single EC2 instance can be used as a NAT, or you can use the AWS NAT Gateway (managed, scalable, more expensive). This setting will be IGNORED if you do not build private subnets.
