RIGA, Latvia (AP) — Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa said Sunday that her government has reached out to Sweden and other Baltic Sea allies in NATO for assistance as it investigates the cause of damage to an underwater data cable running to Sweden.

Latvia said it had dispatched a warship on Sunday after damage to a fibre optic cable to Sweden that may have been "due to external factors".

RIGA, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- An underwater fiber optic cable connecting Latvia and the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea was damaged early on Sunday, the cable's owner, SJSC Latvian State Radio and Television Center (LVRTC), informed.

"Full solidarity with the EU countries of the Baltic Sea after the Sweden-Latvia undersea data cable damage," said von der Leyen on X. "The resilience and security of our critical infrastructure is a top priority," the Commission president added.

Hundreds of Swedish troops have arrived in Latvia to join a Canadian-led multinational brigade along NATO’s eastern flank.
