Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to impose a 25% surcharge on or shut off the electricity the province exports to Michigan, New York and Minnesota.

President Donald Trump said he will double the tariffs imposed on steel and aluminum imported from Canada after the province of Ontario announced surcharges on electricity going into New York, Minnesota and Michigan.

Beginning Monday, new market rules require any generator selling electricity to the U.S. to add a 25% surcharge, according to Ford's office. Ontario's government expects to generate revenue of $300,000 to $400,000 Canadian dollars per day, "which will be used to support Ontario workers, families and businesses."
