A loophole that allowed millions of Americans to buy cheap, tariff-free goods from online Chinese retailers like Temu and Shein is being closed as part of President Trump's "Liberation Day" tariff actions.

The 'de minimis' tax exemption allows duty-free imports on orders that are less than $800. Going forward, Trump will tariff those packages at 30% of their value or $25 per item.

De minimis tariff exemptions, which currently allow packages worth as much as $800 from China and Hong Kong to enter the US duty free, will end on May 2, the White House said, a potential blow to discount marketplaces like Temu and Shein.
