WASHINGTON (AP) – Lawrence Guyot, a civil rights leader who survived jailhouse beatings in the Deep South in the 1960s and went on to encourage generations to get involved, has died. He was 73.

Lawrence Guyot, whose friendship with Barry goes back to their days with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee in the 1960s, saw the former mayor speak at Canaan Baptist Church on Sunday.
