Two hundred years ago, the son of a saddler from a rural French village devised a groundbreaking tactile writing method of raised dots for blind people at the mere age of 15.

Braille characters are represented by a series of small dots in specific arrangements, so producing a display that can recreate those patterns seems easy enough. It’s not, though.

Since creating the Mr Dot character, Mr Reynolds has travelled around the UK teaching more than 20,000 children about the use of braille, which is what inspired his new book.

Braille, however, modified the system to be suitable for the blind. He made each cell six dots instead of 12 so each combination could be read without moving the finger.

Traditional refreshable braille displays use the piezoelectric effect which works by using voltage to expand small crystals attached to a single braille dot in the display.

Typing with the keys embosses raised dots on thick paper. “You can’t get the thin kind of paper because it’s too thin, so the Braille dots will just rip through the paper,” Isla says.

Braille’s six-dot code was developed in the 1800s. The raised dots allows people to feel the words rather than see them.

In fact, the Braille dots on parking meters, bathroom signs and ATMs were already illegible to most blind Americans when the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 put them there.
