BMW was very close to having a new version of the iconic M1. However, the automaker pulled the plug on that project at the last minute, and it's unlikely BMW will build a new supercar anytime soon.

The M1 was like a flag planted in the sand for BMW, standing tall and proud, proving forever that BMW is capable of creating more than dynamically balanced sport saloons and handsome estate cars.

While the M1 started off as a collaboration with Lamborghini ... the tentatively named 2026 BMW iM should start at around $200k and go even higher from there, depending on options.

"The i16 had all the style of a future classic, but there were still novel touches that moved the design forward from the M1," BMW design boss Domagoj Dukec revealed on Instagram at the time.
