The number of shipping containers that sailed into the nation’s top container port last week was roughly one-third lower than during the same period last year.
President Donald Trump raised those and other tariffs in an effort to increase the amount of goods the U.S. exports. However, exports out of the Port of L.A. were down 3.5% last month compared to last year. The most common exports out of the port are recyclable paper, pet and animal feed and soybeans.
The Port of Los Angeles, the busiest in the Western Hemisphere, has seen a 35% drop in cargo volume compared to the same period last year, according to Gene Seroka, the port’s executive director. The drop reflects the harsh impact of recent tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration.
