For pre-teens watching TV in the early 1970s, the opening to Zoom was captivating with seven, charismatic, barefoot kids in rugby shirts running, jumping, dancing and singing on a bare stage.

Fifty years ago, the show “Zoom ... breaking series for PBS. In 1972, Joe Shrand, now a doctor and child psychologist, was a local kid who auditioned for a new TV show that WGBH was developing.

Then, in 1999, a glorious new addition to our after school line-up appeared: PBS's Zoom. A reboot of the '70s show, Zoom was the Mickey Mouse Club for us second-class citzens without 70-plus channels.
