Mohammad-Reza Shajarian, Iran’s most celebrated contemporary singer whose appeal cut across generations and political leanings in Iran, died at a hospital in Tehran at the age of 80.
The piece features classical vocalist Mohammed Reza Shajarian, but also 80-year-old folk musician Hadj Ghorban Soleimani, a master of the dotar, a two-stringed lute.
Shajarian was born Sept. 23, 1940, in the religious city of Mashhad in northeastern Iran, 620 miles east of Tehran. During his childhood, he got his start in singing through reciting the Quran.
