The MacBook Pro 16 starts at $2,500 for a 12-core CPU/19-core GPU M2 Pro, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. The laptop tops out at $6,500 for a 12-core CPU/38-core GPU M2 Max, 96GB of RAM, and an 8TB SSD.
This results in SSD read and write performance that’s dramatically lower than the previous generation. The base model M1 and M2 MacBook Air provide just 256GB of storage.
Of course, the SSD in the entry-level M2 MacBook Pro is still quite fast, but cutting the speed by 50% compared to the previous model seems unfair to consumers, especially in a “Pro” machine.
