ProPublica reports that of the 21 top-level trauma centers in the country, only one, at the Interim LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans, has universal screening program for PTSD.

PTSD patients may frequently have other physical and mental-health problems. The new memorandum encourages a range of treatment options, including yoga, biofeedback, massage, acupuncture and hypnosis.

Experts say there are two main reasons many trauma centers don’t screen for PTSD. One is that doctors are only now becoming aware of just how common it is for victims of trauma to suffer from PTSD.

The researchers found the best performing screening tool to be the PEDS-ES, without the additional risk factors. This had 85% sensitivity and 63% specificity for full or partial PTSD.

The report said that the VA treated more than 438,000 veterans for PTSD in 2010, showing evidence of the widespread scope of the problem. Similar numbers are not available for the Defense Department.
