Neptune's elusive auroras have been finally revealed thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope. Astronomers scouring through the combined data from Webb and the Hubble telescope have discovered the presence of trihydrogen cation (H3+), which is created in auroras .

Webb has filled in many gaps left by Voyager 2, the only spacecraft to visit the planet. In 2022, the telescope captured Neptune's ghostly rings and revealed a band of clouds around a known vortex at the planet's south pole for the first time.

Neptune lies in the frigid, dark, vast frontier of the outer edges of our solar system, about 3 billion miles away from the sun.
