The subway map, as New York knows it, is now a thing of the past. The MTA unveiled on Wednesday a brand new, detailed schematic of the subway system — the first fully redesigned subway map in nearly 50 years.

The MTA has rolled out a brand-new, fully redesigned New York City subway map—the first since 1979. The modernized map is brighter, bolder, and more accessible, with updates aimed at improving navigation for all riders.

When the subway first opened in 1904, maps were simple diagrams that depicted individual subway companies, such as the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT), the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Company (BMT), and the city-owned Independent Subway System (IND).
