Braemar Castle dates back to the late Middle Ages, and the current castle was erected in 1628 by the Earl of Mar. It played an important historical role in the Jacobite uprising.

The 14th Century Kindrochit Castle, though now largely destroyed because of plague, is worth a visit to see some of the walls and sunken floors clearly showing the castle’s layout.
