Volcanic Miyakejima in the Izu island chain about 180 kilometers south of Tokyo is a piece of paradise as well as a haven for wild birds.

The Izu islands are served by ANA (00 81 3 5435 0333; www.ana.co.jp), which flies daily from Tokyo to Hachijojima Island and by passenger ferries from Tokyo's Hammamatsucho Pier (about 10 hours).
