If you are installing beams that are hollow inside, like faux wood or wooden box beams, you can use a different method. You also don't need to restrict the beams to ceiling joist locations.

Attach scrap wood blocks to the ceiling where the beams will be installed. These will act as a base to secure the hollow beams. Slide the beam boxes over the scrap wood and nail them into place.
