Though he’d had small roles in movies and on television throughout the early 1960s (he’d been a Marine before that, and had studied journalism and television production on the G.I. Bill), Hackman was 36 before anyone really took notice.

"Sunday Morning" looks back on the brilliant career of Gene Hackman, and talks with Brad Dourif (Hackman's co-star in "Mississippi Burning") and Hollywood Reporter chief film critic David Rooney about a star who refused to be typecast.

Hackman won two Oscars out of five nominations in his career. He snagged noms for his supporting roles in “Bonnie & Clyde” (1967) and “I Never Sang for My Father” (1971) and lead role in “Mississippi Burning” (1989). He retired from Hollywood in 2004 for health reasons.
