Microsoft previously announced that a UWP version of Skype would not be released. Instead, the company decided to integrate Skype features into its Windows 10 Video and Messaging apps.

Design concepts of what appears to be a UWP version of WhatsApp seem to point to a partnership between Microsoft and Facebook to port the Silverlight app over from Windows Phone 8.

Microsoft does plan to allow Windows 10 Mobile users to also run the coming unified Skype UWP app at some point. Microsoft officials aren't yet saying when that will happen.

All that said, the new UWP Skype app does show some promise. The dark theme is attractive, and while early builds were very light in features, Microsoft has been quick to add additional capabilities.
