The factory workers clung to yellow plastic pipes on the back of a semitruck for hours. Eventually, the truck tipped over and at least seven people were swept away by the floodwaters.

The factory sits a mile north of Unicoi County Hospital, the site of a dramatic helicopter rescue that same day of 62 staff and patients stranded on the roof as the river brook loose from its banks.
