Almost 125 years after Edmond Dédé’s death, his magnum opus “Morgiane,” perhaps the oldest existing opera by a Black American, is to be staged for the first time.
Besides music, he was also an abolitionist and a member of the Institute d’Afrique, a group that worked to abolish slavery. Dédé came back to the U.S. during the Jim Crow era.
