NFL owners have passed a rule that will allow both teams to possess the ball during overtime in the regular season.

The NFL is bringing its playoff overtime rules to the regular season. Owners on Tuesday voted unanimously to pass a rule change that will guarantee both teams at least one possession during regular-season overtime periods regardless of the outcome of the first possession, according to multiple reports.

These two changes come on the same day that the NFL’s dynamic kickoff was approved on a full-time basis (with touchbacks being moved up five yards to encourage further upticks in the rate of returns). Consideration to amending onside kicks will take place later this offseason; the same is also true of the tush push play.

NFL owners have passed the rule making playoff overtime rules also apply to regular season games. Both teams will now get to possess the ball in overtime even if a touchdown is scored on the first possession of overtime. Overtime in regular season will remain 10 minutes, compared to 15 minutes in the postseason.

The NFL is really trying to make the kick return an exciting event again. A modified kickoff rule will move touchbacks to the 35-yard line in 2025. In 2024, a touchback on a kickoff resulted in the ball being placed at the 30-yard line.

During the NFL’s annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, the owners voted and approved some changes ahead of the 2025 NFL season. From a slight tweak in the overtime format, to adding influence to replay assist, and placing the ball farther up after a kickoff touchback.
