December’s Weed of the Month is Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii). This species is a specially regulated plant on Minnesota’s Noxious Weed list.
In New South Wales, the plant is reported to cause mortalities in sheep and cattle with symptoms of HCN poisoning. Africa (west): the leaves are cooked together with Cassia tora [FABACEAE] (q.v.).
