Deadly floodwaters triggered by record rainfall in Australia’s northeast rose for a third day Monday as authorities warned flood-stricken communities to brace themselves for further destruction.

Six storms around Australia and its territories are expected to strengthen in the coming days, with one system likely to trigger life-threatening flooding in the nation’s north and three others with at least a moderate chance to form into tropical cyclones by Monday.

Storms have already dumped more than a meter of rain in two days in parts of Queensland, engulfing homes, businesses and roads in muddy waters
