BERLIN (AP) — Swiss artist H.R. Giger, who designed the creature in Ridley Scott‘s sci-fi horror classic Alien, has died at age 74 from injuries suffered in a fall, his museum said Tuesday.

Giger’s art practice was molded from an early fascination of “skulls and mummies and things like that,” as he told Time Out magazine in 2009, as well as his own childhood fears.

It was dreamed up by a then relatively little-known surrealist artist from Switzerland, H. R. Giger, who created what became the on-film xenomorph years earlier, in a 1976 painting titled Necronom IV.
