KINGSTON, N.Y. — Beginning today, Oct. 24, those living and working in the 845 and 914 area codes will have to dial the area code when they place local calls within those area codes.
The change, which began Sunday, will apply to both the 845 area code that includes Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan and Ulster counties as well as 914 - which covers Westchester County.
The new area code is expected to offer “telephone numbering relief” for about 28 years. “It’s just a marker of time,” said Sanin, who, like Nitty, remembers when 845 took over 914 locally.
