Northern Californians get the new 837 area code in 2025. Here's where, why, who gets it, and why this is different from the 916 shift, the state said.

The new 530 area code is expected to accommodate the need for new phone numbers for about 16 years. The remaining 916 area code could divide in seven to eight years.

Customers will continue to dial the three-digit area code for all calls to and from telephone numbers with the 530 and 837 area codes. The price of a call will not change due to the overlay.
