The reintroduction of 213 into the 323 territory will begin in November of 2017. Instead of actually splitting up the 323 territory, phone numbers with the 213 area code will just be issued instead.

On March 16, 2023, the CPUC approved a new area code of 738 as an overlay on top of the 213/323 area code. The 738 area code is now the 12th area code in the greater LA area.

Today there are 10 area codes in L.A. County, and in about eight months, there will be an 11th: 738, which will cover the same territory now served by 323 and the much-diminished 213.
