So anyone can drive themselves to the park entrance and then wait to join the main group to hike up Santa Ana which leaves around 11am? I'm planning to rent a car while I'm in El Salvador but I hadn't seen many posts from people driving themselves to make this hike, only taking buses from the town of Santa Ana.

Yes you can! We met people that did this! The thing is its so much cheaper to take the bus- the only benefit is not having to leave so early in the morning if you drive.
