I'm planning to fly into Bozeman on Sept 17 and am interested in detouring out to Virginia City for a few hours before heading on to YNP. Will the historical buildings be open in the afternoon? And it seems we can't include Nevada City/train/gold mining then, right?

Yes, VC doesn't close up the historical buildings until something like 5 or 6 pm. Nevada City should be open the same times. Hope you enjoy.

I jjust went to the website and the only listed hours I found were for the Visitor Center. I’d call them directly for more info on hours. We travel w 2 dogs and I would say while not unfriendly to dogs, its not set up for dogs. We found a little park where they could relieve themselves and run around a bit. It was a cool day so we left ours in the car while touring. Not much shade so leaving them in the car on a hot day is not option. Hope this helps.
