We are looking to visit Vietnam, base ourselves at a beach and go on some trips. We want to go to Hoi An, Hue and do the Top Gear Tour across the pass. Is this all possible from this beach area. Would also welcome other suggestions for better beach base and also other places to see in this area. Thanks.

If you want to be in a beach town, stay in Danang. You can always take daytrips to Hoi An, which is only 29km away. Hoi An also has a few nice beaches about 5km away, An Bang (very touristy), Lonely beach (very nice and cheaper), and Coconut beach (you will have the whole beach to yourself). Are you travelling with kids? We rented scooters for the week, and travelled between the 2 towns (we stayed in both). The distance between Danang and Hue is about 100km one way. So put a whole day aside if you are not sleeping over in Hue. (you are obviously going to stop along the way to take in the scenery and take pictures). Also Hai Van Pass has lots of twists and turns, if you are travelling by scooter and are not an experienced motorcycle driver, beware of trucks, etc. But still worth it, very beautiful. I have a contact in Danang for renting scooters. Just message me.
I've just moved to Da Nang to work here for a year, and had been really looking forward to doing lots of swimming! However, there seem to be "no swimming" signs pretty much down the entirety of the beach? There are only a few small sections where swimming is permitted, and so these tiny areas are super crowded and it's impossible to relax and swim. The sections seem to have been chosen arbitrarily and even if I venture out a few metres from the invisible line in the water, an overzealous lifeguard uses his whistle and waves me back in. Does anyone know the reasoning behind this? There are no boats moored, and the water is very shallow even in the no swimming areas.

We walked along the beach last night ... as frequent sea swimmers, we noticed large and dangerous rips.
