This is a Soviet era diesel powered submarine, not a German WWII U-Boat. I don't think it has been restored unless you count the numerous mannequins. Signage and printed explanations aboard could b…Full review by JBT2

The owners speak abit of English, but I’m 99% sure they don’t do a tour in English. Me and my friends went and it’s great just to walk through it and take everything in. :)

The closest thing to what you are after is a short train trip away to Bremerhaven. It contains the last model U Boat from WWII that was produced, sunk, then resurfaced, and fitted out to be a museum. It’s been finished with the interior, exactly the way it would have been in wwii, it’s even staffed by some old Germany Navy volunteers on the odd occasion by the door when you come aboard. Now that’s history!

Actually the Americans had U-boats, the Japanese, the Russians and so on. It is a trick of using the foreign name in to your own language. I agree it is totally confusing. It is a U-boat, and it isn’t, depending on your mother tongue.

Yes, it's open. Kids are no problem. You should note that there is a great fish market eating point about four minutes walking (west) from the Museum. The ferry from mid-town would drop you off about five-minutes walking (strongly recommend the all-day ticket for getting around town, and the ticket works for buses, subways, and the ferries as well).
