We came upon this wonderful State Park, during our 10 days of exploring the Hudson River Valley; it was yet another fortuitous happenstance for us. Being early May, there were few vehicles about; al…Full review by RICART75

Would you recommend for a cabin stay, 3 nights, for a limited budget family w/older kids from the NYC area looking to get out of the City but not be in the thick of the woods? We're not opposed to really rustic, especially for a short stay, and are aching to get away from concrete, subways and sirens. We want a bit of R & R, hiking, maybe indulge in the kayak tour one afternoon with plenty time to chat around the campfire in the evenings...and this site looks like my city-born-and-raised hubby could get a meal at a restaurant in a nearby town if the peace and quiet is just too much, lol. What do you think? Are the bathrooms ok? Anyone use the showers? Any recommendations on an essential item to pack city folks might not consider? Should we bring vinyl mattress covers to prevent creepy crawlies like lice or bed bugs? We're thinking of staying here for a long weekend in August, any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, I didn't see the cabins, I stayed in the tent area, but I believe the cabins and the tenting areas share a bathhouse. The bathrooms are clean, flush toilets and running water. The shower stalls are small, and the floor is concrete. It's a pretty typical State Park bathroom. There's quite a bit of distance between the camping area and the Marina. I showered down at the Marina (there's much more room and when I was there the bathhouse at the campsite was out of order temporarily when I needed a shower). If you are looking for comfort, definitely take some sort of mattress pad! I lie on a light camping pad and a sleeping bag, but I'm sure if you're looking for comfort you can do much better!! There is a lot to do in the area, you can visit the Vanderbilt Mansion, the FDR Home/Presidential Library (both are quite affordable). I didn't get a chance to try out the Atlantic Kayak Tour because they weren't open for the season in late April. We went horseback riding at Netherwood Acres and that was really great!! Even closer is the Mills Mansion, I saw it from the outside but didn't take the tour. There are plenty of restaurants and you aren't far from the Culinary Institute of America so you should be able to find decent food!! We enjoyed roasting hot-dogs and camp cooking, but if you're looking for a really great meal head down to Poughkeepsie and check out the Mill House Brewing Company and while you're there, take the Walkway over the Hudson for a nice hike with nice scenery. There's so much to do in the Hudson Valley up in Hyde Park that your family could enjoy a much longer trip!! I do want to mention that one reviewer said that they couldn't sleep because of the train. Yes, the Metro North runs right through the area but maybe they didn't blow the whistle at night? I honestly didn't hear it at night, but I heard it during the day. You're also close to the Holy Cross Monastery, I believe I heard their bells in the morning and evening, but it could have been another church. Enjoy your visit!!
