when is a good time of year, to go to avoid the crowds?

I went there mid week in August and it wasn’t busy at all. In the summer you are avoiding school tours.

How long do people typically spend there?
A:
Depends on age and interest. I went with 3rd graders on a school field trip. We spent about 2-3 hours on the ships and another hour or two around the corner at a park for a picnic.
