You can not explore outside of the area, but the immediate surroundings are yours to see. The fossil plants and insects are in limestone layers; you split layers to find them. They have been brought in by front end loader. The staff will help you to get started, then you split to your hearts content. The museum at the park is OK, but most of the good stuff is somewhere else. The staff at the commercial dig site has samples of many of the fossils that are better than the museum.
