We stayed in 'The Rocks' motel just across from the railway station. The Observatory is located next to the airport, about 25 minutes away, an easy stroll along the Warrego Highway. There is plenty of 'footpath' and lighting to use if you are walking - we had no trouble in the dark, but a torch might be useful. There is a motel or two in between and if doing it in daylight, the pretty and informative park on the righthand side is worth a look (about 15 mins walk)
