We thoroughly enjoyed our drive to this remote lighthouse. The scenery is beautiful and the drive itself is part of the adventure. The fur seals are an added delight, lying in the sun so close to the…Full review by natclay

We went with Moa Tours - mainly senior citizens. Despite this, we climbed up all the steps to the top (seven out of eighteen of us did) and were very glad we did as it was a beautiful day and we h…Full review by Isabel H

It’s more than two decades since we last visited the lighthouse and we were impressed with the new staircase with two handrails and a rest stop. A big improvement on the previous rickety rail. There…Full review by mrswinendine

Hi. I am keen to visit Cape Palliser lighthouse early November'2019. As per Maritime NZ website, it says there is no public access to enter the lighthouse. However, online reviews say you can go to the top of the lighthouse. Can you please confirm whether we can go to the top of the lighthouse or not? I don't see any external staircase in the images, so am confused by the conflicting messages online. Also, if you would know the timings to go upstairs (or a source where I can get this information), that would be helpful as well. Thanks in advance.

I was there in March 2019. There are steps to go up to the lighthouse but you can't go inside. Views are amazing from the lighthouse platform. The road wasn't in very good condition when I was there (there was water running across part of the road) so perhaps the road is the problem? If the road washed out totally it would be impassable (as there is only one very narrow road for access). Perhaps that is why the maritime website says that. Just a guess.

Hi there, I see you visited Cape Palliser recently - I just wanted to reach out and ask if you would kindly tell me what sort of car would be suitable to take on the Cape Palliser Road, I have looked on Google Satellite and it looks to be gravel and in places a little rough. I have a standard hatch back car, quite low to the ground though. Will this be ok? Cheers heaps, really appreciate your time!

Can someone please tell me if there is a rail next to the steps up to Cape Palliser? I have a blind husband who is fit but would need a rail to hold onto on way down especially. Thanks Debby

Not sure this question makes sense - it's a 2-2.5 hour car jouney from Wellington to Cape Pellusa - Probably about an an hour from Featherston in each direction. You would not use a shuttle service - either self drive (warning for car rentals - unsealed road, check your agreement) or go on a tour, and include other things on the journey.

I visited in Mid September and saw plenty of seals. Apparently best time is Nov - Jan when they have pups, people have commented on seeing them in March and August, so I'd imagine they are arround most or all of the year, but I doubt it's the kind of thing I'd want to do on a typical Winters day.
